As an LPN for 35 years I was never in the capacity to be a "manager" however I was hired as an LPN to form a new part of the ER and that was to be a Call Manager. I was on the ground floor of this particular plan and was able to set this part of the nursing care plan as I saw fit. I was to call patients after they left the ER to make sure they were following the doctors orders, to see if they needed any extra help, like home health and to make sure they got their Rx's filled and knew how to take them. I felt qualified to do this job and I loved it as I worked alone and could manage as I saw fit, and the pay grade was good. So, I say all that to say this, there are plenty of "specialty" areas for LPN's because sometimes we don't think we are "enough".
This is a great example of not only resilience, but your individual fortitude to stay in a profession you love, and consider alternatives to the grind of the floor - especially the ED. Brilliant. Thank you for sharing your story.
