About This Episode:
What do you do when you finally get everything you wanted, and nothing in your life changes?
A friend of mine chased a promotion for six years. She got the email, and about an hour later, she was sitting in a parking garage crying, hands on the wheel, not going anywhere. She did not know why. I think she did. She just did not want to say it out loud, at least not yet.
We talk about what happens after the thing you wanted finally arrives, and why a reward does not end the performance. It only gives the performance a bigger stage.
Key Points:
Why getting the job can sometimes be harder on a person than not getting it
The difference between a reward and a real change
Three questions to ask yourself before you keep performing on the new stage
The questions worth sitting with:
When was the last time you took a moment to think about what you actually want from your life?
How long has it been since you asked yourself that question honestly, instead of staying busy with everything in front of you?
If it has been a while, what do you think staying busy with everything else has cost you?
The lesson:
A reward does not end the performance. It only gives the performance a bigger stage. The only way to actually change your life is to stop performing long enough to ask yourself what you really want. You have the power and ability to look at your life and create one that has meaning and is yours. You.
Two ways forward:
If you stay in the performance, here is what it actually costs you. Not a crisis. Just more years on a stage you did not choose, telling yourself there will be time later to ask what you actually want. There will not be, unless you make the time.
